چکیده
For cognitive systems, embodiment appears to be of crucial importance. Unfortunately, nobody seems to be able to define embodiment in a way that would prevent it from also covering its trivial interpretations such as mere situatedness in complex environments. The paper focuses on the definition of embodiment, especially whether physical embodiment is necessary and/or sufficient for cognitive systems. Cognition is characterized as a continuous complex process rather than ahistorical logical capability. Furthermore, the paper investigates the relationship between cognitive embodiment and the issues of understanding, representation and task specification. 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. Representation as Internal Simulation: A Minimalistic Robotic Model
Embodied cognition theorists have in recent years proposed that a cognitive agent's "representations" or "inner world" can at least partly be constituted by internal emulations or simulations of its sensorimotor interaction with the world, i.e. covert perception and action. This paper recapitulates some of the empirical evidence, distinguishes between implicit, internal and external anticipatio...
متن کاملAre Robots Embodied?
Embodiment has become an important concept in many areas of cognitive science. There are, however, very different notions of exactly what embodiment is and what kind of body is required for what kind of embodied cognition. Hence, while many would agree that humans are embodied cognizers, there is much less agreement on what kind of artefact could be considered as embodied. This paper identifies...

متن کاملFlexible sequence learning in a SOM model of the mirror system
We present initial work on a biologically and cognitively inspired model that may allow embodied agents to autonomously learn sequences of action primitives (forming an overall behaviour). Specifically, we combine a flexible model of sequence generation with a model of parietal mirror neuron activity. The main purpose is to illustrate that the approach is viable. Although further work is needed...
متن کاملBody-in-Motion: Broadening the Social Mind
Embodiment has become an important concept in many areas of cognitive science during the past two decades, but yet there is no common understanding of what actually constitutes embodied cognition. Much focus has been on what kind of ‘bodily realization’ is necessary for embodied cognition, but crucial factors such as the role of social interaction and the body-in-motion have still not received ...
